CONSTANTE C. MENDOZA, Editor in Chief
After getting married and starting a business, Jonel had no sports or cardio exercises. He ballooned to 220 pounds and became hypertensive at 37 years old. Doctors advised him to diet and exercise. When he moved to Manila temporarily in 2005, he became obsessed with working out in the gym and losing weight. He became friends with all the fitness trainers at Gold’s Gym and began enrolling in courses there to become a fitness trainer himself and eventually earned his certificate. He began joining foot races in 2008, got hooked and within a year had run a 102-kilometer ultramarathon. Jonel has joined close to 300 races to date, including 38 marathons and 44 ultramarathons. He has organized over 200 running events and mountain bike races in the country since 2010. He introduced ultra running in Cebu (2010), Davao (2011), Zamboanga City and other provinces in the Philippines. He is probably recognized most for organizing the King of the Mountain Trail Run Philippines (KOTM) series of trail races in Northern Luzon that has merited the accreditation of acclaimed races in the U.S. and Europe.
CONSUELO D. MENDOZA, Managing Editor
Con was always into team sports such as soccer, basketball and volleyball from grade school to college and law school, even when she had children and a full-time job. Sports took a back seat when she and Jonel started their own business in the 90s. She’s thankful that Jonel introduced her to the individual sport of running in 2008. It enables her to keep fit and remain active while juggling many roles.
