More than 2,000 supporters responded to the call of the Philippine Marines to race with them in their elite training grounds at the Marine Base Gregorio Lim in Ternate, Cavite last Sunday, October 22, 2017.
Both serious and leisure runners joined four distance categories: the 5K, 10K, 25K and 42K of the Philippine Marine Corps Marathon, dubbed as the “toughest but most scenic road race in the Philippines” to date.
The Philippine Marine Corps Marathon (PMCM) is held annually to celebrate the Marine birthday and aims to raise funds for the terminally-ill and wounded soldiers. Proceeds go directly to the Wounded Warriors’ Recovery and Reintegration Program that focuses on helping injured soldiers heal and return either to active duty or normal function as private citizens.
This year’s staging of PMCM, the third since 2015, was especially dedicated to members of the Corps killed and wounded in action in Marawi. The Marines sent three battalions and its Special Operations Group under Naval Task Group Marawi to defeat the Isis-linked Maute Group and protect civilian lives.
A total of 36 Marines were killed and 353 were wounded during the siege that lasted five months until the Commander-in-Chief’s pronouncement of the liberation of Marawi on October 18, 2017. The fatalities included First Lt. John Frederick Savellano and First Lt. Raymond Abad who manifested the highest integrity and professionalism of Marines when they recovered and returned P52.2 million in cash and P27.7 million worth of checks to authorities at the height of military operations in the war-torn city.
PMCM Race Director Jonel C. Mendoza requested marathoners to offer a short prayer and the snappiest salute to the 36 Marine heroes whose images lined the race route.
In his closing remarks, the Commandant of the Philippine Marine Corps, MGEN ALVIN A PARREÑO AFP who ran and finished the 42K event extended his gratitude to all the runners, generous donors and the Philippine Marine Corps officers’ spouses who unselfishly gave their time and efforts to support the program of the Corps for its wounded personnel.
